In the background of one scene, an isolated mountain can be seen on the horizon. The other potential Easter egg is seen from the top of Arondir’s tower. While it is a lovely gesture, it is perhaps somewhat foreboding as well: the internal symbolism of alfirin would seem to be an association with death, which is the doom hanging over any relationship between an elf and a mortal. The first of these is the gift of Bronwyn: the seeds are known as alfirin to the elves, but are called symbelmynë by mortals, and it is those flowers that grow over the tombs of Theoden’s ancestors as shown in The Two Towers. While most of what goes on in Tirharad is new material created for the show, there are still a couple of call outs to material from Tolkien’s larger legendarium in the storyline of Bronwyn ( Nazanin Boniadi), Theo ( Tyroe Muhafidin), and Arondir ( Ismael Cruz Córdova). The memorial could well be very personal to the High King. In this case, it might even be a further Easter egg, for at least in one version of the story, Fingon is Gil-galad’s father. An elf holding the dragon-helm, however, is probably Fingon. Though it was made by and for the Dwarves, it was given to Maedhros, the son of Fëanor, who in turn gave it to his cousin Fingon, who eventually gave it to the mortal man Hador and his descendants. The Dragon Helm of Dor-lomin is one of those artifacts that has a long and complex history in Tolkien’s world and points to a handful of possible identifications. The other statue is more difficult to identify, but it appears to be holding a very distinctive helmet. They were accompanied and supported on their mission by Huan, the Hound of Valinor, so the statue is almost certainly of Huan and Luthien, though it could possibly be one of Huan’s former masters. One of them is fairly clear: the carving of an elf with a hound nearby is almost certainly Luthien, who stole a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown with the mortal man Beren. While the primary memorial seems to be for Finrod, there is a glimpse of two others that comes in the scene as well. She walks with Elrond ( Robert Aramayo) past a series of memorials carved into the great trees of the forest. The next set of significant Easter eggs comes when Galadriel returns to Lindon.
